Caitlin and I have been looking at music videos to help us with our new one and we found this one, not only does it fit what we're looking for perfectly but it's also now one of my favourite music videos ever!
The song is quite heavy in places and goes hand in hand with the zombie apocalypse. Such zombie films such as the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead use heavy rock music in it (Drowning Pool - Bodies) and Zombieland has Metallica - For Whom The Bell Tolls (which is possibly my favourite filming opening ever created). We are using an acoustic song however which deviates from the stereotypical zombie song, but I think it still works and creates a good atmosphere while telling a story as well.
This video is quite tense and
We'll stick to our storyboard and hope to start filming on Thursday, weather permitting.
You're A Zombie Now
[verse]
You said you loved me for my brains
I didn't know you meant to eat them
And maybe I'm insane
I thought together we'd defeat them
When the skin was falling off your head
You told me that was just a rash
You stumble around like the living dead
And your favourite song is the monnnnster mash
[chorus]
I know what I must do
Cause you're a zombie now
You're a zombie now
I'm breaking up with you
Cause you're a zombie now
You're a zombie now
You're a zooooombie now
[verse]
We've been on the run for seven weeks
When I met you I was smitten
We battled through the infirmary
You didn't tell me you were bitten
[bridge]
The hardest part for me is having to decide
Should I cut off your head or put a bullet between your eyes
[chorus]
[chorus]
Ch-ch-changes!
At the last moment, Caitlin and I have decided that we are going to do a different song and make a completely different video. We have found the artist, Sam Hart, and found a song by him, You're A Zombie Now. We messaged him and have his permission:
Caitlin and I have drawn the storyboard and that will be uploaded soon.

Social Realism - Fresh Meat
Fresh Meat is a TV series for Channel 4, created in 2011. It's about a group of people in their first year of Uni and things don't go too smoothly for them. There are a group of 5 'freshers' and Howard who live together in a flat outside of the fictional University in Manchester.
Quadrophenia Case Study
Release: UK - 2nd November 1979
Gross: SEK 1,678,408 (Sweden)
Gross: SEK 1,678,408 (Sweden)
Quadrophenia was made in 1979, 14 years after the date it was set in. In London, 1965 there was a strong hatred between the Mods and the Rockers, and this film depicts the lives they lead and real events that happened within a fictional story.
I think the audience of this film is aimed at youth, particulary youth from the 60s and 70s as they can relate to it most. I can't see older people watcthing this film who didn't live in this generation and it's quite a cult film. On the IMDB almost 7,000 people have voted Quadrophenia to have a rating of 7.1/10 which is quite high. A high percentage of the votes were from Male users and not from the US which I thought was fitting as its quite a male orientated film. The 2nd highest was people aged between 30-44.
Reviewers on IMDB are saying that the film is almost too lifelike and they didn't like it when they first saw it because of that. One man said 'I hated this film when I saw it as a teenager back in 1979. The reason was the movie was realistic--too realistic! I identified (in some respects) with the main character Jimmy, and his life was bleak and depressing. Seeing it over 20 years later, I love it! It's a superb mix of the 1960s British "Angry Young Men" films, the Who's great album and 1979 sensibilities.' I find this really interesting as he was an American reviewer and this is a very British film, so this shows that this youth culture of the mods and rockers was a worldwide (well at least UK and USA) trend.

Representation of Youth in Cinema
Today in cinema youth are depicted in many ways, but a majority of them are negative views. Everyone has a differnt view on youth, to what they do in society, to the age. To me 'youth' is from around 14 to 28/29, most people will go out and party, have fun, act irresponsible - of course there are execptions a lot of the time but TV and media stereotypes youth into this narrowminded view.I have been watching several films which represent youth:
Attack the Block - Muggers, agressive, rude > nice on the inside and don't really mean any harm.
Human Traffic - Good guys, enjoy a party
Juno - Get preggers, quite mature for the age, responsible (ish) American and not British, could that have an affect?Trainspotting - Similar to HT just a bit darker, maybe the characters are a little older too
Youth Culture - Punks
Punks first broke into the scene in the 60s with bands such as 'The Sonics' who could neither sing or play instruments very well, but it was different to the other genres and sounds that were going around at the time (The Beatles, The Kinks, Motown) and the youth of course wanted to rebel. They broke the conventional rules, and once one band did that and whole flood of them joined in with people such as Iggy Pop & The Stooges and The Ramones. The audiences and bands wanted to be as different as they could be to anything else around at the time (The Beatles, The Kinks ect).
Not only with music, but also in fashion and so the most outrageouss fashions came about, this shocked the older generations and they disapproved of this. One of the most famous fashion designers of the 70s is Vivienne Westwod who is still designing today. Punk music is one of the biggest revalations that has broken all the bountries. Youth saw this as an outlet and, as well as breaking the rules of music, they broke the rules of the law at times as well. This produced many riots and lots of violence - of course this all got blamed on youth which is a little stereotypical.
Many of the punks believe in 'Anarchy in the UK' (also a song by the Sex Pistols) and joined riots against the police and the government for many reasons, such as not having a enough freedom.

Please take the survey, it will only take a minute!
We edited it on iMovie, but for the final we will be doing on Final Cut Pro as it is more precise. This is just a quick one to get feedback to see if the audience will like it and to just see how things would work out. As it goes, things worked out pretty well and nothing went wrong!

Filming Progress!
Wednesday 23/11/2011
Yesterday we started our filming of Kiefer playing guitar, luckily it was a nice sunny day, though a little chilly, and we sat out on the benches.
We used the big Sony camera and a tripod to keep it steady, it took us about an hour to get all the footage we wanted and we filmed it from many different angles so that we have lots of footage to choose from and to edit.
Our filming is now completed and the only thing we have left to do on the footage front is to do the stop motion of our male actor writing the letter, as Frankie did in our other stop motion. After this we will start editing!

16th November 2011
Today we wanted to start filming our guitar scene using a Sony HDV 1080i, but unfortunately our actor didn't turn up so we couldn't. Luckily though we have planned ahead and allowed plenty of time, and also brought in the equipment for another scene so we worked on that instead.
Today we did the stop motion for the letter the girl writes 'My dear I'm so confused, cos lately I've been thinking a lot about you' and we completed that. While doing this we decided we will use a male actor to write his part of the letter as well and will hopefully make progress on this later in the week.

Very very rough draft!
To make this we just used the camera on an iMac as we were just trying it out, and miming along with the guitar. Then for the stop motion we used a Canon DSLR and our friend just to write something out on paper, like a letter, to see if the camera would pick up the writing on the page. We then used iMovie to edit, in our final edit however we will be using Final Cut Pro. We had a few difficulties such as the images kept moving and zooming in and we just wanted them to stay in the same place. We soon relized though that it was the 'Ken Burns' effect and we removed it from all frames and that sorted the problem. We also added the 'Romantic' filter on the stop motion as we really liked the effect, this subtley contradicts with the lyrics of the song as it's not at all Romantic.
The start of the song has an introduction which we wanted to cut out, we thought we had on iTunes, but when we added it to iMovie it turned out we hadn't. So we cropped it down on Garageband and that was fixed. This video is the final product of our rough draft and we hope to start filming the actual video very soon!

Media Addiction
With more video games and consoles than ever before, parents are becoming worried about their children gaming too much and becoming addicted. Many children and teens go through this and spends hours, days, week and even months locked away playing computer games in their room. This becomes their reality, and their constant craving. When they are playing games they are fully involved in it and are content, when they are taken away from it for school/work etc it is all they think about and is the first thing they do when they return home. Most people see addiction as a bad thing, but for some people gaming is an escape from their reality, they become an alter ego and are un-defeatable - this is where post-humanism applies.
The Pros and Cons of Gaming
Pros
- Encourages co-operation
- Relives boredom
- It's fun
- Socialize with people online
- People may become secluded and shut off from the world
- Create an alter-ego in the gaming world and live vicariously through that.
- Will not socialized with 'real' people
- May encourage violence (Columbine High School Massacre)

M83 - Wait
M83 - Wait from Boris Winter on Vimeo.
The reason I posted this video is because it uses stop motion which is what Caitlin and I will be using in our music video. All of this video is set in black and white which I think emphasises the song as it's quite abstract, if the video was in colour I don't think I'd find it as effective. However, because of the nature of our song being more up-tempo will will be using colour.
As well as stop motion this video using filming as well. My partener and I are also looking into this as well, so that we have a mix of stop motion and movie. We have made an extremely rough draft of what we hope to achieve and the basic idea of what we will be doing.

Ghostwatch
In 1992 the BBC made a TV program where it featured several celebrities talking about a house that was haunted and they treated it like a documentary. At the very beginning it showed a notice saying that all of the following footage was fictional, but people who tuned in after the message was shown did not know this and thought it was real. All the people who starred in it gave the impression they were taking part in a 'reality show' and not a stage drama. The presenters of the show were famous people such as Micheal Parkinson and Craig Charles, and at the time were quite popular and looked up to, because of this the audience would trust them and believe all they would say.
When it was finally aired on Hallowe'en a lot people wrote in complaining about the show and that it was too scary, especially for the time it was being aired at, and was not suitable for such ages.

Since the last post, Caitlin and I have decided to try a bit of stop motion in our videos and we have started planning our 2nd and more in depth storyboard which will be posted soon.
As well as this we are also coming up with ideas; we have thought about a narrative where the couple in the song are writing letters to communicate to one another and we're watching them. It will also have someone playing the guitar parts in it to fill the instrumentals.
We are going to start casting our roles in this and choosing our locations and our equipment during the week. A large majority of the video will be shot inside as the weather is getting a bit grim and chilly so this means we can use the larger cameras which shoot in a much better quality.

Human Traffic
Human Traffic is a film that focus's on the rave scene in the 1990s, when drugs and clubs were at their high. Its about five friends in Cardiff and their mad weekend off together, going to clubs and partying. It was directed by Justin Kerrigan and was released in 1999, at the end of the era. Many people have said it was exactly like they remembered the nineties and was pretty much and autobiography, and others said it was nothing like the 90s and was too over the top. Of course, everyone have a different experience and so you would expect people to disagree. The filmed is mainly aimed at people who lived through the 1990s as a 18-30 year old
I'd considered the film to be British and all the actors and the director is also British. Unlike a lot of movies today which are produced by an American company, Human Traffic is produced by Fruit Salad Films which is an Irish/British company. In this respect I would class it as a British film.
The characters in this are all part of a social group who share a common interest, drinking, drugs, music and partying every weekend - this brings it into a real context, people are friends with others they share a common interest in (and for a lot of people its the same things as the people in this film), the audience can relate to the characters in one way or another as they are pretty ordinary people. Each character has a weakness, Jip - sexually paranoird, Moff - bad life at home, Lulu - feminist, Koop -jealous and paranoid his girlfriend will leave him and Nina - Doubts herself. These insecurities also help the audience to identify with them.
Human Traffic is set in the Wales, United Kingdom. It only shows people from that area and so it is culturally biased, people from other countries (and even the UK) may have not had the same experience in the 90s as they characters did in this film. The way the film is shot, being narrated by Jip and the characters talking into the camera give it a documentary feeling and involve the audience into the film. Instead of feeling like a viewer, you feel like a participant.
In the intro it shows people at festivals and clubs partying which does show you an insight of what it was like at the time - not just the good points and partying, but also what was going on in the news and riots.
The scene I have chosen to analyse is the scene where Moff and his new found friend are talking about Star Wars. It is shot from mainly a static angle which looks at both characters in the same shot, it just focus' on them and doesn't move in or zoom, it makes the audience feel as though they are an observer at the party watching the convocation. This makes them feel more involved and emphasizes how it is a socially realistic film.
I don't think Human Traffic promotes drug usage through the effects and uses of gratifications because it's down to what the people thinks and not how the media effects them, but how they affect the media itself.
Hyperdermic Needle, Two Step Flow Chart and Uses of Gratificiation.
The Hypodermic Needle/Syringe Model
This model says that the media is directly inputted into the receivers mind and they accept it.
Two Step Flow Chart
This is when you are influenced by somebody else to like something, it can be a celebrity you look up to, a member of family or a friend. The media is passed on secondhand to people who are influenced.
Uses of Gratification
Instead of asking people what media does to them, this theory asks what people do to media. It says that the audience are responsible for what they do with media and they choose for themselves.

Jeff Buckley - Grace (1996)
Jeff Buckley is my favourite musican and I thought why not post a music video of him?
All the video is set in a sepia filter and is mainly performance based of Jeff Buckley and his band, with a little bit of concept thrown in there. It's quite a dark music video filled with shadows, which contrast with the light that is cast upon the performers from different angles.
It is full of quick shots of the band from different directions, and also just random objects, such as a water glass, road signs etc. There are very short cuts of the video between scenes which look like old burnt film. This combined with the sepia tone give it an old fashioned feeling, and shots show Buckley in a Taxi (possibly) going around a city.

In the last minute or so of the song when it reaches its climax the video speeds up, some parts in fast forward, and things crash to the floor, like a vase of flowers which was previously seen in the video. This part of the video reflects well to the music but none of the song really relates to the lyrics. It comes to an end of an extremly high note that Buckley is singing, and the video ends with a close up of his face in black and white with extreme contrasts between the shades and then fades out to a black screen.

Do people copy things they see in films, TV and computer games?
Studies in psychology show that people do get too involved in films and videogames to such an extent they think they are part of it. This has happened in the film Natural Born Killers.
The film was released in 1994 and is said to have influenced Columbine High School Massacre in North America and a couple who went on a killing spree in France.
With video games becoming more and more lifelike, I think people will start to copy things in videogames. Howeverer, I think it is all dependant on the person and how they think. The percentage of people who play videogames and are influenced by them is a lot lower than people who play videogames just because they enjoy them.
As TV and games advance in technology, such as 3D, it will keep progressing until it is a virtual reality and appear as the people are actually in the game. I think this will lead to problems and the players will become too involved and may leave behind their sense of reality.

Censorship
Censorship is when something is considered too rash for the public and so it is censored to stop harmful or senstive issues affecting people. Several films have been banned for being too racy or aggressive, these include, The Last House on the Left, A Clockwork Orange and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. All these films were made in the 70s and were all banned for the violence or disturbing nature of them. Caitlin Moll's A2 Media Blog :): Stop Motion

Gareth Walsh
Since the last post, my media partener, Caitlin, and I have decided to use a different song by Gareth. This one is called 'Fuck You, Bitch'
It's about a girl who is cheating on her boyfriend, she tells him and but he already knows shes been lying to him and doesn't like her any more because she is a bitch.
"She says, my dear I'm so confused,
Cos lately i've been thinking a lot about you,
she said, she said,
I say my dear, I'm no doctor but I can see,
I know you better than you think,
I know when you're lying to me.
Cos your blood starts to boil,
And your face goes red.
And then you'll tell me a story about another boy you had in your bed.
Fuck you, bitch.
Fuck you, bitch."
It is a very short and simple song with some excellent guitar.

“Splitscreen,” directed by J.W. Griffiths
I just thought this was really cool and would be a good idea for a music video. I really like the simplicity of this video and how alike the clips are, yet are filmed in Paris and New York; (I think..possibly somewhere in America) two very different cultures. Then there are little blips in it, such as the bike, a racing bike in one frame and in the next a classic old one.

It’s come around to summer again, the time of year when you stop hearing from your friends,
And you stay awake for nights on end,
And you over think the smallest things.
And you stay awake for nights on end,
And you over think the smallest things.
It’s starting to feel like summer again,
all the great plans you have, none of them happen.
And you don’t know what to do with yourself anymore.
And you don’t know what to do with yourself anymore.
No I don’t know what to do with myself anymore.
all the great plans you have, none of them happen.
And you don’t know what to do with yourself anymore.
And you don’t know what to do with yourself anymore.
No I don’t know what to do with myself anymore.
Summers always been the same for me,
I thought that would change since I turned 18,
all the things I could’ve done
all the things I could’ve seen.
Since I haven’t been sleeping, I’ve stopped dreaming about dreams.
Never wanted to write songs about feeling alone,
but it seems it happens more every inch that I’ve grown,
but I’m far too young to be feeling this old
but I suppose its part of what you know, what you know.
I thought that would change since I turned 18,
all the things I could’ve done
all the things I could’ve seen.

but I’m far too young to be feeling this old
but I suppose its part of what you know, what you know.
It’s come around to summer again,
and I haven’t got one friend.
And I've been staying awake for night on end.
And I’ve been over thinking the smallest most pointless things
And I feel like I haven’t left my room in days,
So I’m going to lock the door and drink tea until I die.

Digipaks - Arctic Monkeys
Although I did not study any of Arctic Monkeys music videos I am looking at their Digipaks and they use them a lot, for to of their albums, singles and an EP.
I have decided to analyse the 2006 single 'Leave Before The Lights Come On' and the 2009 album 'Humbug'.
'Leave Before The Lights Come On' is a very basic cover (almost as basic as Suck It and See). It looks as though it is made out of recycled card and has a roughness to it, all that is on the front is their then logo, and on the back is a barcode, tracklist and Publishers. When it is opened up is another tracklist and a more detailed account of the songs, produced by, published by, record company on the left hand side, on the right is the slot where the CD is and also a quote 'And they were left with their good friend Speculation. It was felt to be the best way. It was hard to be sure but was certainly suspected there were many unanswered questions, perhaps more amongst some than others. "We'll meet again, on a more weathered landscape" was thought never really said.
With cries of "the boy's none soft!" they will part, not a moment too soon.'
The CD itself is also blank, apart from a few words saying 'With cries of "the boy's none soft!" they will part, not a moment too soon.' (The same that were in the quote.)

The Digipak could be left so plain so people will only care about the music on it and not the materialistic packaging.
'Humbug' has a totally different approach, it was made 3 years later and is a full album, the front cover features a picture of the band but the same image layered over and moved around, slightly mirrored. Alex Turner the lead man is sitting at the front of the picture. They have donned a new logo for their name on this album. The back is quite plain with another logo - a different one again, and the track list with some Domino Records writing on it and their logo. The colouring of it continues the theme from the front.

When you open it up there is a full spread of a picture of two people (perhaps band members, though it is hard to tell) climbing up golden sand dune against a blue sky, the image has been edited a lot and the contrast has been changed to a very high level. There a a lot of shadows which adds mystery. The left has side has a booklet inside of it with pictures of the bands and lyrics, where the right hand side has the CD itself in it in another sleeve covered in the logo of Domino records.
The CD itself has an image printed onto it with the initials AM. To me, the image looks like a pie with pastry letters on top of it which are a little bit burnt, but interpretation is open.

Digipaks
Digipaks are another version of a CD case, but instead of being made from plastic are made from card in a booklet kind of style, the disc tray is still made out of plastic so the CD can be held in it. The front and sometimes the back cover have a booklet inside of them, or sometimes the CDs are held in them.
They are often used for singles or special releases and are cheaper than jewel cases in some instances.
Digipaks are a registered trademark of AGI World Ltd, an Atlas holdings company.

Textual Analysis of Music Videos - Laura Marling
Laura Marlings latest song 'Sophia' was released onto YouTube on August 8th 2011. It was directed by Fred&Nick who have also directed a Mumford and Sons video in 2009 - Marling and Mumford are of a similar genre (indie, folk, acoustic) and there is a similarity in the way they have been shot. As well as 'Sophia' Fred&Nick are also directing a short film to go with Marlings new album 'A Creature I Don't Know'.
The video was shot in a Cathedral in Buenos Aires while she was on a tour out there. As the video is shot in a Cathedral and there are some religious meanings in the song you can relate the two together, such as 'on your knees to pray', 'coming on judgement day' which are the main stand-out lyrics.
Laura Marling has been preforming music for several years now and has three solo albums behind her, but only recently has she broken into the spotlight and like a majority of new artists videos they feature mainly themselves so the audience can see what they are like.
I find that in this video Laura looks quite vulnerable at the start, but as the song progresses she becomes more confident and bolder - like the song. In the beginning she is sitting on a chair playing acoustic guitar, and singing by herself, then as the song starts to develop you see other musicians in the background, Laura stands up and joins them where the song gets into full swing.
When they're playing, to me, it feels very personal and more like a family than a band. They are all in a circle and facing inwards, usually all the band are facing the front and the lead singer gets all the attention, whereas this feels like a real group affair. However the drummer is right in the centre of the group.
Genre and sex has a real effect on music videos, such as a female pop star would be singing (well, autotuned) and dancing, the star of the video. While Laura Marling, a folk singer is playing an instrument and singing from her heart, and while she is still a solo artist she gets the rest of her band involved in the video.
There are no motifs or logos in the video, and it has no references to anything else. I think the music video is beautifully shot and I like how it enhances the musical skills Marling has, and then how it changes into a higher pace. This is a very neutral video and I think can be aimed at all ages and genders, though I don't think younger children would like it very much.

Laura Marling - Sophia
Oh I have been wondering where I have been pondering
Where I've been lately is no concern of yours
Who's been touching my skin
Who have I been letting
Shy and tired I ?
I'm wounded by dust
All I have been wondering where I have been pondering
Where I've been lately is no concern of yours
Who's been touching my skin
Who have I been letting
Shy and tired I ?
Sometimes I sit, sometimes I stare
Sometimes they look and I don't care
Rarely I weep, sometimes I must
I'm wounded by dust
When the bell toll, when the bell gon' chime
You better call for your woman up high
And when the bell tolls for your last day,
You'll be getting down on your knees to pray
I'm a good woman and I never did say whatever it was that you did that day
I'm not a woman that ? but you said that it was coming on judgement day
Now Sophia
I'm wounded by dust
When the bell toll, when the bell gon' chime
You better call for your woman up high
And when the bell tolls for your last day,
You'll be getting down on your knees to pray
I'm a good woman and I never did say whatever it was that you did that day
I'm not a woman that ? but you said that it was coming on judgement day
Now Sophia
I'm wounded by dust

Fall Out Boy - A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More "Touch Me"
I confess, I'm messed up
dropping "I'm sorry" like you're still around
And I know you dressed up
"hey kid you'll never live this down"
'Cause you're just the girl all the boys want to dance with
And I'm just the boy who's had too many chances
I'm sleeping on your folk's porch again, dreaming
She said, she said, she said, "Why don't you just drop dead?"
I don't blame you for being you
But you can't blame me for hating it
So say, what are you waiting for?
Kiss her, kiss her
I set my clocks early 'cause I know I'm always late
Write me off, give up on me
Cause darling, what did you expect
I'm just off a lost cause
a long shot, don't even take this bet
You can make all the moves, you can aim all the spotlights
Get all the sighs and the moans just right
I'm sleeping on your folk's porch again, dreaming
She said, she said, she said, "Why don't you just drop dead?"
I don't blame you for being you
But you can't blame me for hating it
So say, what are you waiting for?
Kiss her, kiss her
I set my clocks early 'cause I know I'm always late
(always on, always on)
You said you'd keep me honest
(always on, always on)
But I won't call you on it
(always on, always on)
I don't blame you for being you
But you can't blame me for hating it
So say, what are you waiting for?
Kiss her, kiss her
I set my clocks early 'cause I know I'm always late
I set my clocks early 'cause I know I'm always late
Textual Analysis of Music Videos
I chose Fall Out Boys - 'A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More "Touch Me"', it was released on July 6th in 2006 and was directed by Alan Ferguson. The genre of Fall Out Boy is pop punk/alternative rock/pop rock and this attributes to their style of music videos - they are mainly narrative based with clips of themselves preforming in. They are quite a well established band and as this song is taken from their third album they do not use full performance videos. Alan Ferguson has become a frequent directer for several of Fall Out Boys music videos and did 'Dance Dance' which is from the same album and also has a similar feel to this video. Other videos for Fall Out Boy include, 'This Ain't A Scene', 'Thnks Fr Th Mmrs' and 'I'm Like A Lawyer With The Way I'm Always Trying To Get You Off (Me & You)'.
The relationship between the lyrics and the visuals is not very clear, the video features vampires, while the lyrics tell a story about a boy who's girlfriend left him, the boy wants her back and so sleeps outside her house. He thinks she is too good for him and so he's a lost cause and should be written off. This is not the case of what happens in the video.
The music and the visuals compliment each other well, as the video is more like a short film at about 7 minutes long, while the song is only 2:48 it includes a lot of pauses of the music and then short acting parts and a fight scene. While the music is playing you can hear little diegetic noises in the background, e.g a garage door opening and several banging noises.

Throughout there are close ups of the band playing their instruments and acting out their parts, bassist Pete Wentz is the main character and so he has the most close ups and the most interesting role. When there is a fight scene and they roll up the music changes to a drum beat and a bass line running through while a build up to mayhem is happening. Then the main song breaks through.
Fall Out Boys motif of a kind of bat drawn by Wentz and it is used a few times in the video on a car bonnet and on a bass guitar. The clips of the band as themselves playing are quite short which suggest the record company are showing a storyline rather than the actual band, but by still having them involved for a lot of it. It makes the band seem really fun and amusing, but in a dark way as the video is a little Gothic. It is based on several old vampire films such as Blade and the introduction is based on the film The Lost Boys. Even the name of the song features an intertexual reference 'Sixteen Candles' is a film from the 80s featuring Molly Ringwald .
The video also features several cameos from other bands who are also friends of Fall Out Boy, this includes: William Beckett & Mike Carden from The Academy Is..., Brendon Urie & Spencer Smith from Panic! At the Disco and Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes.
A majority of the video is narrative with a story of Pete being a vampire and making friends with some humans who train him up to kill the vampire who created him. This all ends with a vampire war and some dramatic music, then it turns out all the cops are also vampires and don't like Pete so cart him off in a cop car, it then ends in a cliffhanger. As I have mentioned before the band themselves play all the main parts and are preforming the song in a basement/warehouse area by themselves.
I think it's a very good music video and shows the band aren't afraid to take risks, it leaves the audience wanting more and it looks like a clip from a movie. It's quite a neutral video as it can be aimed at either males or females, though a majority of the characters are male.
